The Cape Egmont is a Cape in South Taranaki District , the region Taranaki on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The cape is located around 35 km southwest of New Plymouth and 27 km west of the summit of Mount Taranaki . The cape can be reached from the New Zealand State Highway 45 via the almost 5 km long Cape Road , which also leads directly to the Cape Egmont Lighthouse .
Cape Egmont Lighthouse
The Cape Egmont Lighthouse is located at the Cape 230 m inland. The lighthouse was originally built in 1865 on Mana Island , 6 km northwest of Porirua , but dismantled there in 1877 and rebuilt on Cape Egmont . Since then, the lighthouse has been doing its job there, fully automatically since 1986.
Cape Egmont Fault (Zone)
There are numerous faults around Mount Taranaki . The Cape Egmont Fault (CEF) is one of them and extends around 10 km southwest of the cape for around 53 km in a south-westerly direction along the Maui oil field in the Taranaki Basin . The fault is part of the Cape Egmont Fault Zone (CEFZ), a larger contiguous area of faults that roughly coincides with the extent of the Taranaki Basin and extends from Cape Egmont in a north-south direction.
