Gustaaf Frans Nees ( Staf Nees for short ) (born December 2, 1901 in Mechelen ; † January 2, 1965 ibid) was a Belgian composer and carillon player . He is the father of the composer Vic Nees .

Life

From 1916 to 1922 he studied at the Conservatory of Music in Mechelen and at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven , where he won the Lemmens Tinel Prize in 1922. His teachers included the Flemish musicians Julius van Nuffel and Lodewijk Mortelmans .

Staf Nees continued his studies with Jef Denijn at the Royal Glockenspielschule in Mechelen (1922–1924). From 1924 he taught at the Lemmens Institute, in 1944 he became director of the Mechelen carillon school. In 1958, Staf Nees won the Babalock Prize.
