Vic Nees

Vic Nees (born March 8, 1936 in Mechelen ; † March 14, 2013 ) was a Belgian composer and choir director . His father was the composer Staf Nees (1901-1965).

Life

After completing his music theory studies at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music in Antwerp (with Marcel Andries and Flor Peeters ), he studied choral conducting with Kurt Thomas at the Hamburg University of Music , where he won the master class in 1964. From 1961 Nees worked as program director for choral music at the Flemish Radio in Brussels , and from 1970 to 1996 also as conductor of the renowned radio choir . He was also director of the Philippus de Monte vocal ensemble in Mechelen and Ter Kamerenkoor in Brussels. Since 1998 he has been a member of the Royal Flemish Academy for Science and Art and author of numerous musicological publications. Vic Nees was one of the most internationally renowned choral composers in Belgium.

His compositional work consists of choral cycles, larger choral works and a large number of song cycles. Vic Nees has won the Eugène Baie Prize (1973), the AGEC Prize (1990), the Joost van den Vondel Prize (1995) and the ANV Visser Neerlandia Prize ( 1995) excellent. His compositions have been included in the repertoire of many choirs inside and outside Europe. Vic Nees was a regular jury member at international choir competitions and advisor to the European Federation of Young Choirs .

His best-known work is the Magnificat for mixed choir and solo soprano (1981). More recent works are the Trumpet Te Deum for choir, soprano and two trumpets (2003) and the Neusser Messe for choir, organ and trumpet (1998).
