Stagno is the name of an Italian noble family from Messina in Sicily , who belonged to the high nobility .

The Stagno family descends from the Spanish nobleman Don Bernardo Estagnol , who was the councilor of the Sicilian King Frederick II of Aragon and governor of the duchies of Neopatria and Athens . His son Tommaso , confidante of King Ludwig of Sicily , was raised to Baron von Scuderi, Passarelli and Calandrino in 1314, his grandson Manfredo was enfeoffed with Licata in 1408 . Giovanni Stagno was made Count of Cassandola by Charles II in 1685 . Giuseppe Stagno di Scuderi became Prince of Montesalso in 1792, and in the next generation, through marriage, the family became Prince of Palizzi , Prince of Alcontres, Marchese della Floresta, Soreto e Roccalumera and others. To this day it provided numerous Sicilian politicians. Today's head of the family is Alberto Stagno d 'Alcontres, 9th Principe di Montesalso e di Alcontres e Palizzi, Marchese di Roccalumera e Soreto (* 1945).
