Location of Stamford Hill in Greater London

Stamford Hill is a district in North London , United Kingdom. It belongs partly to the London Borough of Hackney (Cazenove, Lordship, New River and Springfield) and partly to the London Borough of Haringey (Seven Sisters). The district is best known for its around 30,000 Hasidic Jews who live there and shape the streetscape. Stamford Hill is also the name of the part of the A10 that runs from Stoke Newington High Street to the start of Tottenham High Road.

history

An ancient Roman road ran through the Stamford Hill area, but the surface was destroyed by heavy traffic in the 18th century. At the beginning of the 18th century the area began to develop rapidly and an important traffic junction was established here. At the end of the 19th century, increasing numbers of Jewish families moved in trying to escape the poverty of the East End of London . In 1915 the New Synagogue was relocated to Stamford Hill and in 1926 the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations was established here. This in turn motivated other strictly religious Jewish families to settle in the area, many of them fleeing from the National Socialists .

Jewish life

Hasidic Jews strolling in Stamford Hill

Stamford Hill is a center of Ashkenazi ultra-Orthodox Jews in Europe. An estimated 30,000 predominantly Hasidic Jews live here, with a community growth of around 5% per year due to the above-average birth rate compared to the rest of Great Britain. The streetscape is characterized by Jewish men and women in typical clothing, especially on the Sabbath when the fathers go to church with their children. The congregations come from different directions of Eastern European Judaism, which differ in terms of their customs, clothing and congregational life. The largest community has the Satmar , to which five synagogues belong, followed by the Belz . There are over 50 synagogues in total. Many devout Jews in the neighboring parishes of Stoke Newington , Upper Clapton and Tottenham identify with Stamford Hill.

A volunteer first aid service called Hatzola (Hebrew: rescue) and a volunteer vigilante group called Shomrim (Hebrew: watchmen ) have been set up by and for Jews.

Due to Jewish dietary laws, Stamford Hill has many shops selling kosher food. Some of these shops have a centuries-old tradition, such as the Grodzinski Bakery.
