Stan Hales
R. Stanton "Stan" Hales (born March 16, 1942 in Pasadena ) is an American badminton player and mathematician .
Career
Hales attended Pomona College in Claremont (California) and received his doctorate from Harvard University , where he was a Woodrow Wilson scholar in 1964/65. After receiving his doctorate, he taught as an assistant at Harvard for two years and was at Pomona College from 1967, where he was deputy dean in 1973 and dean in 1982/83. From 1990 he was Vice President at the College of Wooster , where he was President from 1994. In 2007 he retired there. He then worked as a consultant in an academic headhunting company (Academic Search).
As a mathematician, Hales specialized in the field of combinatorics . In 2004 he received an honorary doctorate from Pomona College.
In the field of sports, he won the US championships in badminton in 1970 and 1971 in men's singles.
