Stane o 'Quoybune

The Stane o 'Quoybune (also Standing stone at Birsay) is a menhir ( English Standing Stone ) on a field west of the A967 , near the Loch of Boardhouse, between the towns of Twatt and Birsay on Mainland the main island of the Orkney in Scotland stands.

The very slender Stane o 'Quoybune is one of the tallest and most remarkable monoliths on Orkney, almost four meters high . It dates from the second millennium BC. And belongs to a series of Orkney menhirs to which the folklore motif of the "petrified giant" is attached.

Legend

According to legend, it is a frozen giant who, like the Yetnasteen on Rousay, only comes to life at the turn of the year. He goes down to the hole to drink but has to be back in his place before dawn on New Years Day. Someone who sees him doing it won't live long enough to celebrate the next New Year.
