Stanley Theater (Utica)

The Stanley Theater is a theater building in Utica in the state of New York . It has a capacity of almost 3000 seats, of which 264 are in the box and 1028 in the balcony.

The building is on Genesee Street in the center of the city of Utica. The entrance hall inside is an eclectic combination of style elements from the Classical, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The architectural style was also described as Mexican baroque because of its mix of formal elements .

history

The house was opened as a movie theater on September 10, 1928 with a silent film showing. The architect Thomas W. Lamb built the Stanley Theater in Utica for a theater and cinema chain founded by the siblings Jules E. and Stanley V. Mastbaum , which from 1927 as the Stanley Corporation of America bore the name of the brother, who had died in 1918 Cinema itself. The building was sold to Warner Bros. on October 15, 1928, along with more than 250 other cinemas in the chain , which were successful with sound films.

The Central New York Community Arts Council bought the building in 1974 and renovated it. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 13, 1976 . In 2006 the house was remodeled for $ 20 million. At that time it received the largest free-hanging chandelier in the world; it is equipped with light emitting diodes .
