Star Fox 64 ( Japanese: ス タ ー フ ォ ッ ク ス 64 , Sutā Fokkusu Rokujūyon ), distributed in Europe and Australia as Lylat Wars , is a shoot 'em up by the Japanese console manufacturer Nintendo for Nintendo 64 and the second game in the Star Fox series. In a bundle with Lylat Wars , the Rumble Pak for the Nintendo 64 (N64) was released for the first time, which was later sold separately.

A new edition of the N64 original was released as Star Fox 64 3D on July 14, 2011 in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS .

action

The evil scientist Andross was once banished to the abandoned planet Venom by General Pepper for his misdeeds, but one day strange activities were detected in this part of the Lylat system. The Star Fox team, consisting of James McCloud, Pigma Dengar and Peppy Hare, was sent out to investigate the cause. Once on the planet, Pigma betrayed his team and James and Peppy were captured by Andross, where Peppy escaped.

When Andross tries to conquer the Lylat system again one day, General Pepper turns to the new Star Fox team, consisting of James' son Fox McCloud , Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad and Peppy Hare. The fate of the Lylat system now rests in their hands.

Gameplay

Like its predecessor, it is a shoot 'em up, in which the player controls a spaceship through three-dimensional levels and has to shoot down enemies that appear. There are a total of 15 levels in Lylat Wars . Eight of these are planets, three of them are "sectors", two of them are defense stations, a sun and finally an asteroid field.

  • Arwing (fighter aircraft): The primary device used by the Star Fox team. The Arwing is armed with a standard laser that can be upgraded to a twin laser and a hyper laser as the game progresses. In addition, the Arwing can carry a maximum of nine Nova bombs.
  • Landmaster (tank): The tank is only available in a total of two levels (Titania and Macbeth). It has a standard laser that can be upgraded during the game. The Landmaster can also carry Nova bombs, hover in the air for a short time and is very agile thanks to its hover drive.
  • Blue Marine (submarine): The submarine is only used in the Aquas level. It is armed with an upgradeable standard laser and an inexhaustible supply of special torpedoes (comparable to the Nova bombs).

Star Fox 64 includes a multiplayer mode in which up to four players can compete against each other at the same time. At first you can choose the Arwing as your vehicle, after successfully completing missions (and receiving medals) a tank or the pilots are available on foot.

Naming

Star Fox 64 appeared in Europe under the name Lylat Wars due to trademark problems , as a game called Starfox had already been released for the ZX Spectrum . Nintendo therefore had to rename the game, Star Fox became Starwing and Star Fox 64 became Lylat Wars . In addition, the planet, which was still called Fichina ( フ ィ チ ナ ) in the Japanese version , became Fortuna.
