Fox McCloud

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fox McCloud ( Japanese : フ ォ ッ ク ス ・ マ ク ラ ウ ド , Hepburn : Fokkusu Makuraudo ) is a video game character and the protagonist of Nintendo's Star Fox series. He is an anthropomorphic fox created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takaya Imamura . In almost every game in the series, the player controls Fox in his Arwing , with a few exceptions such as Star Fox Adventures and Star Fox: Assault , in which he is also controlled on the ground. He is the leader of the Star Fox team, and is supported in his missions by his companions.

concept

In 1992, Nintendo and Argonaut Software worked together on a 3D space shooter for the Super NES with the provisional working title SnesGlider . The development team, led by Shigeru Miyamoto, designed a rail shooter from a tech demo , with Nintendo designing the game and Argonaut taking over the programming. Without a story, however, there was a lack of incentive to gamble beyond flying and shooting. Miyamoto designed a universe but couldn't choose a hero who would feel like an epic space saga. Names under consideration included Star Wolf , Star Sheep , Star Fox , Star Sparrow, and Star Hawk . Miyamoto finally decided to choose a fox as the main character after visiting the Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto , the main sanctuary of Inari , a Japanese kami associated with foxes. Inari is depicted as being able to fly, and his shrines, especially the one in Kyoto, are surrounded by red arches ( torii ), which gave Miyamoto the idea that a fox could fly through these arches. Fox's face was modeled after Inari's and, like the statue, he usually wears a red scarf around his neck. Fox McCloud's personality is roughly based on that of Shigeru Miyamoto, with the last name "McCloud" suggested by Dylan Cuthbert , an Argonaut programmer. When asked, Cuthbert explained that the name is a reference to Connor MacLeod from Highlander .

design

Fox is a red fox with green eyes. Its coat color is dominated by an ocher-brown hue, apart from a white tip of its tail and a narrow white stripe on its head. His bushy foxtail is shown very briefly in Lylat Wars / Star Fox 64 as well as Command , possibly suggesting that it might have been cut off at some point. Fox generally looks slim and a little weak, but these flaws are compensated for by his speed and his flying and shooting skills. Fox's clothing style is similar to Falco Lombardi's - he wears a dark green sleeveless shirt, dark red scarf and dark green pants. He often wears a beige flight jacket, beige-red gloves with steel plates on the back of the hand and red-black boots. He wears his blaster's pistol holster and reflector shield on his black belt. On Fox's head sits a kind of headset, on the right side of which is a small screen that Fox can pull over his right eye or into a storage device, depending on the situation, plus a microphone, also on the right side.

additional

One fan theory suggests that Fox McCloud, like the rest of the Star Fox team, had his legs amputated and replaced with prostheses. Cuthbert stated that the characters' legs were not amputated, and Miyamoto said the metal legs were more based on a design choice. He had wanted to make the figure look more human and was not aware of the problems of the fighter pilots of the time.
