Star Wars: Rebellion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Star Wars: Rebellion (in Great Britain and Ireland Star Wars: Supremacy ) is the first strategy game set in the Star Wars universe . It belongs to the genre of real-time strategy games and is set based on the events of the film Episode IV - A New Hope . The player takes on the role of a commander in the service of the empire or the rebellion.

The reception of the game was rather negative. Critics complained that the controls were too complicated and the game mechanics were not very demanding.

Gameplay

Rebellion takes place in a model from the Star Wars galaxy. This is composed of several sectors in which there are planets. The goal of the player is to track down and capture the headquarters of the opposing faction and to arrest the enemy leaders. To this end, he constructs fleets with which he attacks worlds that are in enemy hands. For the purpose of troop production, the player builds his own planets into bases that provide him with the necessary resources.

The player has a largely free hand in his actions and does not receive any guidelines in the context of an action.

Development history

A patch for the game was released in June 1998 . Subsequently, players published programs that could be used to modify the game files . The first program of this kind was called SWR: E and made it possible to adjust the properties of play objects. Another editor, RebEd, later appeared, which enabled more extensive interventions in the game, for example editing the user interface .

Tim McDonald of the online magazine GameSpot described Rebellion as a negligently developed game. It has some programming errors and too weak artificial intelligence . Furthermore, the operation of the user interface is too cumbersome. Even simple tasks require too many mouse clicks.

In a test by Computer and Video Games magazine, the author complained that the game did not have enough depth. Compared to other strategy games, the game principle has few innovations or surprises. In contrast, the staging of the space battles is convincing. Graphics and sound were also successful.

In a review, Andrew Hayward from the online magazine IGN described the openness of the game principle. The players have the opportunity to significantly influence the course of the game through their decisions, which makes the game varied and exciting.
