On the Indian Airlines Flight 403 (Flight number: IC403 ) took place on 17 December 1978, the Hyderabad-Begumpet a serious air accident, when a Boeing 737-2A8 the airline Indian Airlines with the air vehicle registration VT-EAL crashed at. Four people were killed in the accident. The cause of the accident were not extended slats .

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Boeing 737-2A8, which was 7 years and 10 months old at the time of the accident. The machine was assembled at the Boeing plant in Renton, Washington , and made its maiden flight on February 25, 1971, before being delivered to Indian Airlines in March of the same year. The aircraft had the factory number 20485, it was the 277th Boeing 737 from ongoing production. The machine was certified with the aircraft registration VT-EAL . The twin- engined narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-9A engines.
the accident
The machine had received clearance to take off from runway 09 at Hyderabad-Begumpet Airport . Due to a technical malfunction, the slats did not extend, which resulted in a stall immediately after take-off . The start was aborted and the machine made a belly landing with the landing gear retracted. During the belly landing, the aircraft touched down on the center line of the runway with the aircraft tilted to the left and the nose pointing upwards. Then the machine slid about 940 meters further, broke through the airport fence, slid over a canal and came to a stop on stony terrain. A fire broke out and the aircraft was completely destroyed.
Victim
One passenger was killed and three workers who mowed the grass in the area of the airport fence at the time of the accident and were hit by the machine died.
Cause of accident
As the cause of the accident, the investigators noted the fact that the buoyancy aids were not available immediately after the rotation .
