The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a botanical garden in Athens in the US state of Georgia . The approximately 1.27 km² large botanical garden is administered by the Athens-based University of Georgia . The garden is located at 2450 South Milledge Avenue in Athens, approximately three miles south of the University of Georgia campus.

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia was established in 1968. He is a member of the Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance , the American Public Gardens Association , Botanic Gardens Conservation International , the Center for Plant Conservation, and the Earth Share of Georgia . The Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance and the Garden Club of Georgia have their headquarters in the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.

Around 8 km of nature trails have been laid out in the garden, some of which border the Middle Oconee River . The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, along with the Whitehall Forest, was designated an "Important Bird Area" (IBA) by the Georgia Audubon Society .

Several themed gardens are laid out within the Botanical Garden :

  • The International Garden : This garden aims to show the relationship between humans and plants throughout history and their impact on the development of the botanical gardens in general. It contains eleven botanical and horticultural sub-collections that shed light on the geographical origins of plants and the history of the plant collectors .
  • The Native Flora Garden : This garden displays over 300 species of flora native to Georgia. This part of the garden was named in honor of Linton Reese Dunson Sr. created.
  • The Shade Garden : This is where shade-tolerant plant species have been put together.
  • The Heritage Garden : This themed garden displays plants of historical and socio-economic importance to Georgia, including ornamental plants, crops, and native plants. Provides information on the agricultural history of Georgia.
  • The Flower Garden : Here all kinds of flower plants are presented, including irises, dahlias, bulb flowers; Within the flower garden there is a scent garden, a rose garden and a butterfly garden.

There are also the Special Collections ; These include a rhododendron collection, which shows many award-winning rhododendron hybrids; a Native Azalea Collection was established in honor of Fred C. Galle.
