State of the Union is an American future pop band around the singer Johann Sebastian.

history

The band made their debut in 2002 with the album Black City Lights on the label Accession Records founded by Adrian Hates . With the follow-up releases from 2004, State of the Union switched to WTII Records or, for the European market, to Infacted Recordings . In 2004 the second album Inpendum was released . The debut album was re-recorded and produced in 2005 as Black City Lights V.2 . In 2008 the third album Evol Love Industry was released .

In 2009 State of the Union had an appearance at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig.

After the single Dancing in the Dark in 2010 and a four-year break, the fourth album was released in 2014 with My Time Away . Four years later, in 2018, the fifth album Indupop was released .

While the first two albums were explicitly praised for their catchy melody, this catchiness was criticized in the following albums as too simplicity in the songwriting, others saw a varied further development in the fourth album. The album Indupop went back to the roots and returned to the catchy melodies. A small European tour followed in 2019. a. at the NCN Festival.

The State of the Union cover artwork is designed by Nathan Winter. A recurring design element - also for live performances - is a stylized imperial eagle in the shape of a triangle. In some of the State of the Union videos, the wives or partners make a guest appearance.
