The State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum (Swedish Statens historiska museum or Historiska museet for short ) in Stockholm is the national Swedish museum of archeology and ancient history . The museum has over 20 million items from prehistoric times and the Middle Ages of Sweden, most of them as research objects. The Historical Museum is subordinate to the State Historical Museums Authority .

Exhibitions

The museum has several permanent exhibitions:

  • The gold room, designed as an underground treasure trove, houses the rich gold and silver collection from prehistoric times and the Middle Ages .
  • In the exhibition on prehistoric times, the visitor is guided through different time periods on the basis of eight life stories.
  • The Viking Exhibition illuminates not only the life of the Vikings, but also the image of the Vikings in national propaganda of the 19th and 20th centuries.
  • The museum also hosts one of the most comprehensive exhibitions on medieval church art in Northern Europe.
  • This also includes the textile chamber with medieval textiles from Swedish churches

There are also temporary exhibitions.
