Statios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Statios ( Greek  Στατίος ) is a supposed ancient Greek potter from Basilicata .

Statios is from a scratched inscription ΣΤΑΤΙ ... ΕΡΓΟΝ ΚΛΟΕΑΤΩΙ ΔΩΡΟΝ ( Στατίου εργον, Κλοσάτῳ [or Κλοζάτῳ ] δωρον = work of Statios gift for Klosatos [or Klofatos ]) on a kantharos of gnathia style known. While he was initially regarded as a real potter and was accepted in both Thieme-Becker and Pauly-Wissowa , it is now clear that the inscription is a modern forgery on a real antique vase. Today the kantharos belongs to the British Museum in London under inventory number F 594 .
