Statoil ASA is a Norwegian petroleum company that was founded in 1972 and has been part of StatoilHydro since October 1, 2007 . The Statoil brand is active in the end customer business and operates petrol stations in Northern Europe and some Eastern European countries. Statoil is the largest oil company in the Nordic countries and the largest in Norway and employs over 25,000 people. The head office is located in Norway in the city of Stavanger .

Statoil is one of the largest net sellers of crude oil in the world and is a major supplier of natural gas on the European continent. Statoil operates around 2000 filling stations in nine countries. The company has been managed by Helge Lund , former CEO of Aker Kværner , since mid-2004 . Statoil has been independent again since the beginning of 2010, as announced at the end of 2009.
