Staufferfett

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Staufferfett is a lubricating grease and sealant based on calcium stearate . It is an ointment-like substance that is extracted from plant or animal oils or fats by the fats with calcium saponified be. The color is mostly dark yellow, but there is also a red variant. It has a melting point of around 85 ° C.

Calcium soap greases are water-repellent greases and therefore very good sealing greases against water. Calcium soap lubricating greases based on 12-hydroxystearic acid can be used up to approx. 120 ° C.

Stauffer greases are used for slowly running machine parts such as plain bearings, crank bearings, rollers, hydraulic parts, axle bearings from −20 ° C to +70 ° C and especially where waterproof lubrication is required. Motor vehicle water pumps were lubricated with it until the 1970s: so-called Stauffer bushings gradually release the grease by periodically tightening the threaded caps filled with them.

The name is based on the former US company Stauffer Chemicals , which manufactured such greases on a large scale.
