Calcium stearate is the calcium salt of stearic acid and belongs to the lime soaps . In addition to calcium stearate, technical calcium stearate usually also contains other calcium salts of higher fatty acids , for example calcium palminate .

Extraction and presentation

Technical calcium stearate is obtained by reacting calcium chloride with the sodium salt of stearic acid (mostly contaminated with the sodium salt of palmitic acid ) and then washing out sodium chloride.

use

Calcium stearate is used to manufacture so-called non-tox stabilizers for plastics , preferably in conjunction with zinc stearate , but also barium stearate or magnesium stearate . It is also used as a lubricant in pharmaceutical products and as a lubricant ( Stauffer grease ) in the paper and metal processing industry, as a water repellent for building materials and in sand processing.
