Zinc stearate , also known as octadecanoic acid zinc salt, is the zinc salt of stearic acid . It is one of the metal soaps .
properties
It is a white powder with a melting point of 130 ° C, a flash point of 277 ° C and a self-ignition temperature of 420 ° C. The molecular weight is 632.3 g / mol. Zinc stearate is not soluble in water.
Zinc oxide is formed when zinc stearate is heated , and toxic fumes and gases are also produced when it is burned. Contact with zinc stearate can cause skin and eyes to become red. Inhaling the powder can cause a cough and sore throat . Ingestion may lead to nausea , vomiting and diarrhea . Avoid spreading the dust when handling zinc stearate. Attention must also be paid to the risk of a dust explosion or electrostatic charge.
use
Zinc stearate is used as a stabilizer for emulsions .
In card magic , zinc stearate is used as a card powder, which improves the sliding properties of playing cards .
Zinc stearate is also used as a lubricant in plastics processing. It prevents polyamide parts from sticking to one another and is an aid in case of plasticizing problems. If the plasticizing screw does not pull in the material properly, this can be improved by adding approx. 0.2% zinc stearate, especially with polyamide 6.0
