The Al Massira reservoir ( Arabic سد المسيرة) is a dam on the Oum er-Rbia river in the province of Settat in the regions of Casablanca-Settat and Marrakech-Safi in western Morocco ; it is the second largest dam in the country after the al-Wahda reservoir in the north.

Location and climate

The Al-Massira reservoir is located in an overall rather dry and rainy area approx. 72 km (driving distance) south of the city of Settat or approx. 100 km east of Sidi Bennour at an altitude of approx. 275  m . As in the years 2006–2008, the level of the dam fell to around 50% of the normal value in the years 2018–2020 due to the sparse or sometimes completely absent rainfall.

use

The Al-Massira reservoir is used, among other things, to irrigate approx. 100,000 hectares of the agriculturally used areas in the fertile Doukkala plain.

ecology

The reservoir was placed under the protection of the Ramsar Convention in 2003 as a wetland of international importance to be protected . There are numerous species of fish and birds.
