Sidi Bennour ( Arabic سيدي بنور; Central Atlas Tamazight (ⵙⵉⴷⵉ ⴱⵏⵏⵓⵕ Sidi Bennuṛ ) is a Moroccan city in the historical region of Doukkala or the present-day region of Casablanca-Settat . It is the capital of the province of the same name .
etymology
Like many cities or towns in western Morocco, Sidi Bennour goes back to a "local saint" ( Sidi Abou Yannour Abdellah Ben Wakris Doukkali ) who lived and worked in the 12th century and whose tomb ( marabout ) is at the exit of the town.
location
The town of Sidi Bennour lies at an altitude of approx. 185 m above sea level. d. M. about 100 km (driving distance) east of Safi or 73 km south of El Jadida . Marrakech is about 127 km to the south. The climate is rather temperate by Moroccan standards.
history
In the Middle Ages and into the 20th century, it was probably only a small market town - if at all. During the French colonial period and after the independence of Morocco (1956), the town developed into a small town, which has grown steadily since the 1970s due to the immigration of many Berbers. After the creation of the province of the same name in 2009, the city became the provincial capital.

The majority of the population who work in agriculture as well as craftsmen, small traders, taxi drivers etc. are of Berber descent. Leading positions in business, trade and administration as well as in banking, health and education, on the other hand, are mostly in the hands of the Arab-born minority. Moroccan Arabic is mostly spoken among each other.
economy
The main source of income for the province and the city is sugar cane , grain and vegetable cultivation in the area; Cattle and sheep are also raised to a large extent - the markets in the coastal metropolises of Agadir , Safi and Casablanca, but also in Marrakech, are supplied from here. The Sidi Bennour wholesale market is the largest in Morocco. Due to its status as provincial capital in 2009, jobs in administration were also created; there are also several public and private educational institutions.
Attractions
There are no historically or culturally significant sights in the largely new city.
