The Iwanowo reservoir is a reservoir in southeastern Bulgaria near the town of Biser (1,000 inhabitants), Chaskovo Oblast , about 290 km southeast of the capital Sofia. The Asmaka, a right tributary of the Mariza (Greek: Evros), is dammed here. The dam is subordinate to the military or the Ministry of Defense and was used for military exercises.
The embankment dam was built in 1962 and is 19 m high and 146 m long. The storage volume of the reservoir is 3.15 million m³.
On February 6, 2012, the dam broke after heavy rains. The resulting up to 2.5 m high tidal wave flooded the villages of Biser and Leschnikowo, drowning 8 people. The Mariza overflowed its banks as far as Edirne / Turkey, the main border crossing between Turkey and Bulgaria there was impassable. The dam is said to have been in poor condition and cracked for a long time.
