Stefan Hornbostel

Stefan Hornbostel (born August 3, 1955 in Hanover ) is a German science researcher and social scientist . From 2005 to 2015 he was head of the Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance , an institute established by the German Research Foundation at the Humboldt University of Berlin,

Hornbostel studied social sciences at the University of Göttingen between 1975 and 1982 . He then worked as a research assistant at the Scientific Center for Vocational and University Research at the University of Kassel between 1984 and 1986 . He then worked at the Research Institute for Sociology at the University of Cologne and at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Jena . In 1995 he did his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin . He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Jena until 1998. Between 1998 and 2000 he was given leave of absence from the University of Jena to work as a consultant at the Center for University Development (CHE) of the Bertelsmann Foundation . He then returned to the University of Jena, where he was again a research assistant until 2003.

In 2004 he took up a professorship at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Dortmund , and since 2005 he has been a professor at the Institute for Social Sciences at the Humboldt University in Berlin . At the same time he headed the Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance from 2005 to 2015 . Since January 2016 he has been Head of Department 2 Research System and Science Dynamics at the German Center for University and Science Research .

Hornbostel has presented numerous papers on topics related to university development, evaluation, sociology of the elite and control options in science.
