Stefan Schmittmann (born November 8, 1956 in Munich ) is a German manager and has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Commerzbank since May 2018 .

Life

Stefan Schmittmann is the grandson of Heinrich Schmittmann , who was appointed the first President of the Federal Fiscal Court in 1950 , and the great-nephew of the social scientist Benedikt Schmittmann . From 1976 to 1981 Schmittmann studied economics with a specialization in banking at the University of St. Gallen . This was followed by a doctoral degree, which he obtained in 1986 with a doctorate in Dr. oec. successfully completed.

Schmittmann is married, has a son and lives in Munich.

Career

Schmittmann began his career as a research assistant at the Institute for Banking at the University of St. Gallen. In 1986 he moved to Bayerische Vereinsbank (from 1998 Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank ) in Munich, where he was most recently a member of the divisional board and chief credit risk officer. From 2004 to 2005 Schmittmann was spokesman for the board of the Vereins- und Westbank , based in Hamburg, a subsidiary of the Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank. In 2005 Schmittmann returned to Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank as a divisional director, where he managed business with corporate customers and freelancers in Germany. In 2006 he was promoted to the board.

In 2008 Schmittmann joined Commerzbank as a member of the board. There he was responsible for the commercial real estate business and business in Central and Eastern Europe. In this position, Schmittmann also moved to the supervisory boards of the subsidiaries Eurohypo and Commerz Real . From the beginning of 2009 to the end of 2015 he was Chief Risk Officer .

Schmittmann was a member of the supervisory board of numerous financial institutions, trading and industrial companies. In May 2018, the general meeting of Commerzbank elected him to the supervisory board, which Schmittmann appointed chairman in its first meeting. On July 3, 2020, he resigned from the Supervisory Board of Commerzbank with effect from August 3, 2020. Schmittmann is also currently Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Heta Asset Resolution . Until February 2020 he was also Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Commerz Real .
