After Zangerl no longer wanted to support the political course of the ÖVP, mainly due to its political orientation under the provincial governor and functionary of the Tyrolean farmers' union Anton Steixner, he joined the Fritz Dinkhauser - Bürgerforum Tirol list with other ÖVP functionaries in 2008. In the 2008 state elections, the list Fritz Dinkhauser - Bürgerforum Tirol achieved seven state parliament seats and one federal council seat. In July 2008, Zangerl was sworn in as a member of the Federal Council in Vienna, of which he was a member until December 2012. In December 2012, Zangerl moved to the Tyrolean state parliament after the sudden death of the club chairman Bernhard Ernst. In February 2013, due to irreconcilable differences with Fritz Dinkhauser, Zangerl resigned from the executive committee of the Fritz list and resigned from the party.

Stefan Zangerl is married and has two sons.
