The steep storage

The steep storage facility in Essen is a cast bronze miners' memorial that commemorates the period of hard coal mining that was important for the city of Essen .

Artwork

In 1984 the city announced a competition for a memorial to commemorate the history of Essen as at times the largest mining town in Europe. Two years later, the last colliery in Essen, the Zollverein colliery, closed, which has now become a monument itself after abandoned demolition plans.

The competition was won by the Düsseldorf sculptor Max Kratz , who began work in 1985 on the sculpture, which was composed of sixty individually cast bronze parts. The steep storage was unveiled on September 1st, 1989 with the dedication:

“To honor the miners and their difficult work underground. From citizens, companies in the district and the city of Essen "

The bronze sculpture shows a scene in a seam in which miners do their hard work with hammer and pick .

location

First, in April 1985, a model of the future sculpture made of plywood was rolled over Kennedyplatz in order to search for a location . However, it never became the site of the monument. The steep storage is located on Europaplatz south of Essen Central Station in Essen's southern district . The square was known as part of the old freedom until the end of 2017 . The monument was erected on the concrete slab above Autobahn 40 and is thus in direct contrast to the high-rise buildings of today's service city.
