Stone from Othmarschen
The stone from Othmarschen is a boulder that was found on March 9, 1998 during preparatory work for the expansion of the Elbe tunnel to four tubes in Hamburg-Othmarschen . From the time it was found until the Old Swede was found, it was the largest boulder in Hamburg. It is listed as number 23 of 30 on the list of geotopes in the Hamburg area of the Geological State Office, but has not yet been protected as a natural monument.
description
This 22 cubic meter stone has a weight of about 60 t and the dimensions are 4.9 × 3.5 × 2.2 m³. Research by the Mineralogical-Petrographic Institute of the University of Hamburg and studies by the State Geological Office have shown that this boulder, like the Old Swede, is one of the "younger Småland granites ". The age of these granites is estimated to be 1.7 to 1.8 billion years. During the Saale Ice Age it was transported in the glacier from the area around Målilla (in southern Sweden ) to Hamburg. The boulder is weathered on the upper side. In the lower area, however, clear traces of detergency can be seen . This suggests that the granite was not pushed in front of the ice, but transported lying in the ice.
location
The boulder is now in the southern area of the park above the Elbe tunnel between Bernadottestrasse and the Elbe tunnel operations building.
