The stone monastery , also Mary Magdalene convent , originally Monastery of repentance gutters Sancta Maria Magdalena on the stones to Basel , Basel was a convent of Dominican nuns . Today the Basel Theater , the Carnival Fountain and the Basel Art Gallery are located here .

history

The monastery, which was founded around 1230 on the Steinenberg outside the city wall, took in fallen girls , former prostitutes and other "sinners" until 1251 . In the course of the disputes between the city and Rudolf von Habsburg , it was burned down in 1253. The reconstruction took place with the help of donations and the bishop of Basel .

In 1423 thirteen sisters came from the Unterlinden monastery to reform the monastery. A heyday of monastic life followed; Other monasteries were also reformed from here, such as the Himmelskron Monastery in Worms-Hochheim in 1429 , where the previous subprioress in Steinen, Margareta Zornin, was elected as the new prioress .

A flood of the nearby Birsig destroyed part of the monastery in 1339, which was followed by an extensive new building, which was re-consecrated in 1348. The Basel earthquake of 1356 destroyed large parts of the facility again. In 1520 many sisters died from the plague . In the course of the Reformation , the monastery was gradually dissolved.

In 1666 it was converted into a breeding and orphanage or workhouse , after which the building served as a warehouse, archive, barracks, school and from 1834 as a theater. From 1868 the buildings were demolished and after the old foundations had been blown up, the theater was enlarged and the art gallery was built in 1872. The orphanage was moved to the St. Margarethental Monastery in 1669 , where it still exists.
