Havndal stone boxes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The stone boxes of Havndal located east of the school and the sports center of the town. The village Havndal is about 12 km east of Mariager in the Midtjylland region in Denmark . The excavated, examined and partly rebuilt stone boxes can be dated to the early Roman Iron Age .

Stone box 1

Grave 1

The first is a stone box ( Danish light box ) of the type typical for East Jutland. It is east-west oriented, consists of 13 large granite stones and measures 2.1 × 1.4 m inside. No traces of the burials were found. The grave goods essentially consist of eight broken pottery ceramics with and without decorations. Among them were vases, bowls, a bowl, a plate and two other containers, as well as two iron knives .

Stone box 2

Grave 2

The second stone box is of a very special kind and so far unique in Denmark. It can be viewed as a reconstruction next to the village school. It is probably a family grave with four burials. The oldest building consisted of a wooden room in which two plank coffins were deposited one after the other. The additions consisted of ceramics , needles and iron knives. After the wooden structure fell into disrepair, the stone box was erected. It was provided with a higher anteroom sunk into the floor, which was closed to the grave room with wooden beams. The complex was built from layers of large stones and was probably clad with wood. The skeletons were lying on their side with their knees drawn up, their heads facing west and faces facing south.

Stone box 3

Grave 3

Another stone box was found east of Udbyover. It is rebuilt in the Havndal Sports Center. This grave made of boulders is also oriented east-west. Above the center lay a large, flat plate, scratched by the plow. The box measures 2.1 × 1.4 m inside, the depth is 0.5 m. This type of stone box is a mixture of the large stone box in North Jutland and the graceful plate boxes in East and Central Jutland, which is common in Mariagerfjord . The Mariager stone boxes are not as massive as those erected in North Jutland. The position and structure of the pottery is not as fixed as in East and Central Jutland. Guns are rare in these graves. A 0.5 m long iron lance tip, a bronze ring and shards of 8 to 9 ceramics from the early Roman Iron Age were found. The dead man was no doubt a man. It is in the northern section of the tomb, with its head facing west. Traces of a settlement have been found nearby.
