Cultoon's elliptical stone circle was excavated by Euan MacKie in 1974 and 1975. Only two of his 14 larger stones made of amphibolite , hornblende - slate or granite - gneiss stand upright. Their height is 1.9 and 1.5 m. The positions of about 8 other stones were determined. Two of them are clearly visible. Some of the lying stones may have been intended for the dug holes, but were never used. Research assumes that in the first half of the last millennium BC. The construction of the circle of about 41 × 35 m in diameter, started very late, was never completed.
