The stone circle of Gorteanish ( Irish Gort Aonghais ) is a multiple stone circle of the Cork-Kerry series of the type Axial stone circle (ASC). It is located at Ahakista harbor, in the west of the eponymous townland , between Durrus and Kilcrohane in County Cork in Ireland .

The stone circle is set in an area of extensive cliffs with thick vegetation overlooking Dunmanus Bay . Access is at the back of some houses over two clapper bridges . The district itself was cleared of vegetation when it was rediscovered in 1995.

The 11-stone circle (the number of stones in this type of circle is usually odd) consists of four upright and seven fallen stones, the supporting stones of which are visible in three cases. Both entry stones and the axial stone fell over. The cuboid orthostats are 1.4 to 0.8 m high, 1.4 to 0.9 m wide and 0.55 to 0.2 m thick. The north-east-south-west oriented main axis of the circle is about 7.5 m long. It can be seen how the height of the stones decreases from the portal stones to the axial. The state of the circle is a typical result of cattle rubbing stones and not deliberate destruction. None of the stones are damaged.

The stone circle is a bit smaller, but similar to the stone circle of Dunbeacon , which is directly across from Dunmanus Bay.

Boulder burial

The Boulder Burial is about 1.0 m south of the stone circle and consists of the capstone divided into two pieces and three supporting stones. The rectangular block was originally 1.3 m long, 1.2 m wide and 0.55 m high.
