The stone cross Badstubenvorstadt is a listed atonement cross in Zeitz in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

It is located in the northern part of Zeitz city center in the front garden of the Albrechtschen Palais at the address Badstubenvorstadt 12, 13. Albrechtstraße runs north of the cross and joins the Badstubenvorstadt street to the east.

nature

The sandstone cross is designed as a parallel-edged Latin cross , with the shaft widening significantly down to 68 centimeters, while the head of the cross is rounded and has a slight paw shape. Abrasions can be seen on the head, possibly due to old traffic damage. At 70 centimeters, the cross arms reach about the width of the base of the shaft. Above ground, the cross protrudes 126 centimeters from the ground. However, its total length should be 185 centimeters, with a thickness of 33 centimeters.

There is a break three centimeters below the cross arms, but it has been repaired.

history

The cross dates from the 14th to 15th centuries. Its existence had been forgotten. It was only found in 1939 during excavations at the roadside at the corner of Badstubenvorstadt and Albrechtstrasse. In this situation the cross below the arms should have broken. It was then located on the sidewalk and was later moved to its current location, probably rotating it 180 degrees. The building Badstubenvorstadt 12, 13 is said to have had the name Die Mördergrube in the past , there may be a reference to the cross. It seems possible that the cross is also in connection with a place of justice in the part of town historically located here on the sand , which was inhabited by poorer sections of the population in the course of Zeitz city expansion.

In the local register of monuments , the atonement cross is listed as a monument under registration number 094 86580 .
