The stone cross Westdorf , also known as Adalbertkreuz , is a historical stone cross west of Westdorf in Saxony-Anhalt .

nature

The stone cross, shaped in the form of a parallel-edged Latin cross, stands south of a dirt road that leads from Westdorf towards federal highway 185 . It is made of chalk sandstone and is 72 centimeters high. The maximum width is 51 centimeters with a thickness of 18 centimeters. To protect the land monument , a small wooden fence was built around the cross. The cross shows clear signs of weathering.

history

The cross was created in the late 15th century. However, its meaning is unknown. The current location does not correspond to the original location of the installation. At first the cross stood in the middle of the field corridor, which was probably named after the cross as the cross width. The cross was then moved to a crossroads that no longer existed today, although it proved to be a traffic obstacle for agricultural vehicles. It broke off in 1896, probably in a collision with a car. It was found lying on the ground by FW Schubart, parts were still stuck in the ground. The cross was put back together and moved another 30 meters to the north, to its current location.

According to a legend, the cross commemorates the murder of Adalbert II von Ballenstedt by Egeno II von Konradsburg . The murder is historically vouched for around 1080 and at least also happened in the region. However, an actual relationship with the cross cannot be reliably established. The name Adalbert Cross is based on this tradition. Oral tradition says that there was a duel between the two knights, in which Adalbert was killed.
