The Stalldon Stone Row (also called The Cornwood Maidens or Stalldown Row) is a 500 m long row of stones northeast of Cornwood, near Ivybridge in Devon , England . Most of the very massive stones for Dartmoor have fallen over.

description

The 859 m long, north-south-oriented row of stones extends mostly over the southern slopes of Stalldon Barrow. The northern end is on the north side. The northern end is made up of four stones over 2.0 meters high that are still standing, with two other slabs that have fallen over. The four large stones are clearly visible from a distance above the moor. The rest of the row consists of stones that are usually about a meter high, some are slightly larger.

The row is neither straight nor is the distance between the stones very regular. There may even be two rows that meet at a round cairn about 5.0 meters in diameter, because two large columns also stand at the southern end of the row. The northern row begins at the center of the cairn, while the southern row begins next to the west side of the cairn. Its lower part appears to end at a large slab, but it is possible that the row led several hundred meters further to another cairn, for buried stones that may have been part of the row can still be found.

The current series is the result of a "restoration" carried out around 1897. It is therefore possible that the alignment of the two sections is not an original feature.

Aside from the round cairn next to the row near the top of the hill, there are other cairns on the hill, some of which have centrally placed stone boxes.

Dating

The row of stones discovered in 2004 on Cut Hill in north Dartmoor in Devon , England, is the first to be dated. The peat under stone 1 was calibrated to 3700-3540 BC using the radiocarbon method. The peat above it is calibrated to 2476–2245 BC. Chr.
