The stone road was first mentioned in 1316. It got its name because it was one of the few cobbled (stone) streets in the city. This good state of development came about because the princes could use it to get to the main market with the town hall and the Marienkirche without any detours . Because of its exposed location, it was the domicile of merchants and wealthy craftsmen, especially on its east side.

The Rostock tram has been running through Steinstrasse since 1881 , initially on a single track. In the nights of bombing at the end of April 1942, Steinstrasse was completely destroyed on the east side, only three buildings remained on the west side. Since the Steinstrasse was part of the concept for the creation of a socialist main line, a deployment route from the Steintor to the Kröpeliner Tor , it was made three times wider than the historical original in the course of the reconstruction and offered space for a total of four lanes and the now double-track tram. The previously existing connection with Johannisstrasse was blocked. On the east side the Beguinage joins the Steinstraße shortly before the city wall . The original buildings preserved on the west side, including two steel frame buildings by the Laager architect Paul Korff , were integrated into the new buildings.

In order to make the stone street more attractive for pedestrians, the street was completely rebuilt in 2005, the two eastern lanes removed and turned into a sidewalk. Part of this construction work was also to restore the opening to Johannisstrasse. This was realized for pedestrians through a house passage.
