The stelae from Cabeza del Buey I to IV, which today belong to the genus of warrior stelae ( Spanish Las Estelas de Guerrero ), were made by José Antonio del Río, Martinez de la Mata and others near Cabeza del Buey in the province of Badajoz in Extremadura in Spain found. Their carvings are thematically very similar to those on the stele of Solana de Cabañas and date from the Bronze Age .

Cabeza del Buey 1

Stele 1 is 112 cm high, 85 cm wide and 19 cm thick. It is wider at the bottom but broken and part of the engraving is missing. The slate gray limestone block was smoothed after the surface was decorated. The stele is privately owned in Cabeza del Buey .

Location: 38 ° 48 ′ 50 ″  N , 1 ° 0 ′ 33 ″  W.

Ornaments

The non-warlike human figure is incomplete because it is at the bottom of the demolition edge. The head is covered with a kind of helmet or a headdress. The points on either side of the neck could represent necklaces or earrings. The hands lying on the body have only four fingers. The depiction shows in the center of the composition a shield with a V-notch, three concentric circles and a handle, at the top a spear , on the left a sword , a fibula , a helmet, a stirrup or something similar and a mirror , and on the top right a two-wheeled cart with four-spoke wheels and two draft animals.

Cabeza del Buey 2

D. Laureano Sánchez Muñoz found the diamond-shaped stele Cabeza del Buey II in the La Yuntilla Alta during agricultural work near undecorated menhirs . The stele is 174 cm high, 88 cm wide and 24 cm thick. The lower area without decoration could have stuck in the ground. It is made of slate or quartzite and limestone and is in the Badajoz Archaeological Museum .

Location: 38 ° 51 ′ 40 ″  N , 5 ° 18 ′ 30 ″  W.

Ornaments

The human figure, which appears not to be warlike, is at the top. The head is covered with a kind of helmet or a headdress. The sword is on the body. In the center of the composition, the depiction shows a shield with a V-notch, three concentric circles and a handle, a spear , a comb and a mirror to the side of the figure, as well as a two-wheeled wagon with two draft animals at the top right and an unfinished wagon that was probably added later on the left .

Cabeza del Buey 3

The rather rectangular limestone stele, probably chopped off under the picture, was found next to Finca El Corchito and the pilgrimage church of Nuestra Señora de Belén. It is 99 cm high, 52 cm wide and 21 cm thick. It has been in the Archaeological Museum of the Badajoz Province since 1975.

Location: 38 ° 42 ′ 30 ″  N , 1 ° 38 ′ 10 ″  W (according to more recent findings also 38 ° 42 ′ 15 ″  N , 5 ° 19 ′ 17 ″  W )

Ornaments

The decoration was made with wide, deep grooves. The somewhat more warlike human figure is below. The head is covered with hints of a face. The hands have five fingers. The sword is on the body. The illustration shows a shield at the upper edge of the composition with only a rudimentary V-notch, three concentric circles and a handle, next to it a spear . A comb and a mirror are to the right of the figure. The elements that are difficult to interpret, which are seen as primers or other, are present. The car is missing, instead five round dots lying on a line are shown.

Cabeza del Buey 4

The rectangular diabase or diorite stele chopped off at the top was found next to Finca Majada Honda. It is about 100 cm high, 40 cm wide and 20 cm thick. The engravings were made using different techniques. The front view can be divided into three parts:

  • above four human figures
  • in the middle the two-wheeled wagon with two draft animals and three smaller figures around it
  • a Tartessos inscription below

It is located in the Archaeological Museum of the Badajoz Province.

Location: 38 ° 44 ′ 11 ″  N , 5 ° 16 ′ 55 ″  W (based on recent findings)

Ornaments

The human figures on the top have spherical heads, rectangular torsos and arms pointing downwards. A larger and the smallest figure wear horned helmets. There are three more human figures in the central area around the car. One with a raised right arm, the second holding a circular object (perhaps a shield) and the third figure, in front of the carriage, is depicted adoring with raised arms , which otherwise does not apply to any of the other depictions. The car is engraved with clear and deep cuts. At the bottom there is an incomplete inscription with letters in an inverted position. Fragments of steles with similar decorations were found in Benquerencia, Capilla, Castuera, Quintana, Zalamea and Zarza Capilla.
