The Stellenbosch University Choir ( Afrikaans Stellenbosch Universiteitskoor ) is a choir of the University of Stellenbosch . It was founded in 1936 and is one of the oldest choirs in South Africa. André van der Merve has been the director of the choir since 2003. Today the choir is considered to be the leading university choir in the world. In October 2016 the choir celebrated its 80th birthday.

history

The choir was founded in 1936 by William Morris and has established itself around the world.

The founder William Morris remained the choir director until 1939. After Morris, the choir was led by Gawie Cillie (1939–1955), Phillip McLachlan (1956–1975), Johan de Villiers (1976–1984), Acama Fick (1985–1992) and Sonja van der Walt (1993–2002) .

Intercultural world ranking

According to the world ranking system of the INTERKULTUR Foundation, the Stellenbosch University Choir is in first place with 1260 out of a possible 1272 points (as of August 2019) . The choir is also in the top 10 placements in the categories mixed choirs (1st place), sacred music and music of religions (1st place) and pop, jazz, gospel, spiritual and barbershop choirs (1st place) ( Status: August 2019) .

At the 9th World Choir Games 2016, the choir received the Hänssler-INTERKULTUR CD Award as the best choir at the event. The award includes a record deal with the record label Hänssler Classic .

At the 2018 Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales, the choir competed in the Open, Youth and Mixed Choirs categories and won all three categories.
