The Stemmerhof in the Munich district of Sendling is a former farm that today includes a village square, shops, restaurants and rooms for exhibitions and cultural events. Until 1992, the Stemmerhof was the last dairy farm in the urban area.

history

The farm, which has been managed by the Stemmer family for centuries, was first mentioned in 1381 as a donation to the Heiliggeistspital in Munich.

In the 19th century, after the incorporation of Sendling, the family made wealth through the sale of agricultural land as building land, they also donated the building site for the New Parish Church of St. Margaret and, together with two other Sendling farmers, made large sums of money available for the church building association.

In the 1980s, a violent dispute raged over the development of the Stemmerhofwiese west of the courtyard, the last large natural open space in the old village center. A citizens' initiative to preserve the entire meadow failed and the city of Munich prevailed with its plan for a partial development to create living space. The events were reflected in the novel Wurzelwerk by the author Bernhard Setzwein .

After the abandonment of agriculture in 1992, the ensemble was protected from major structural changes by a strict development plan . Today it houses a colorful mix of shops with a focus on ecology, artist workshops and a café. The MUTABOR therapeutic day-care center is now housed in the farm's renovated former western barn . The courtyard still looks like a village oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of the big city. The former rural character of the district is still noticeable, especially from the remaining area of the Stemmerhofwiese.

location

The farm is located on the western edge of the Isar slope, the so-called Sendlinger Berg on Plinganserstraße, directly opposite the old parish church of St. Margaret .
