Steph Winzen

Stephanie Winzen , Steph Winzen for short , is a German concert saxophonist, conductor and music teacher. She is the baritone saxophonist of the saxophone quartet Mainz 04 and teaches classical saxophone at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz .

Career

Winzen started playing the flugelhorn at a local music club in Kicklingen (Swabia) when she was 10 years old , before turning to the saxophone a decade later. In addition to classical music , her stylistic range also includes pop, rock, soul, jazz, ska, folk music and electronic music. Winzen first studied saxophone with Günther Beugel and singing with Matthias Müller at the Krumbach Vocational School for Music . In 2004 she began studying saxophone at the University of Mainz. She studied with the saxophonists Linda Bangs-Urban and Wardy Hamburg at the Mainz University of Music in Mainz . In 2009 she graduated there with a diploma as a music teacher, followed in 2011 with a diploma as an orchestral musician.

Winzen performed with various orchestras. She also played the following world premieres:

  • Lutz Dreyer: Abschied II for soprano and alto saxophone
  • Martin Sadowski: Phono 2013

In 2016, Steph Winzen published a solo CD with contemporary music at ARE Verlag in Mainz, and in the same year the live CD of her saxophone quartet Mainz 04 with jazz, swing and rock was released. Concerts and studio recordings have taken her to England, Greece, Spain, France and Italy.

In 2013, Steph Winzen founded the Mainz Saxophone Orchestra, which she has conducted herself since 2019. Winzen has been teaching at the music school since 2010 and at the study department of the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz since 2018

Honors

In 2017 she was named Mainz city musician and in 2019 she was named patron of the Saxophone Instrument of the Year in Rhineland-Palatinate by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Music Council .
