The Life Saving Exhibition Lake was an artificial lake in Forest Park in the US city of St. Louis , Missouri .
The lake was located on the Louisiana Purchase Exposition exhibition site , where the United States Coast Guard was demonstrating lifeguarding exercises. During the 1904 Summer Olympics , which took place at the same time, the diving competitions and swimming competitions were held in the Life Saving Exhibition Lake from September 5th to 7th . The lake was traversed by a stream and was heavily polluted by manure residues and the cattle manure from the neighboring agricultural exhibition, which is why numerous water sports enthusiasts fell ill during and after the competitions.
In the swimming matches, the athletes started from a plank raft that protruded only a little from the water, which was otherwise used to moor boats during lifeguard presentations. The raft could only be reached via a narrow plank. The turning point and destination were marked by taut ropes, there were no separate lanes.
There is now a church on the site of the lake.
