The Creve Coeur Lake is a lake in the US city of Maryland Heights in the state of Missouri .

history

Creve Coeur Lake was formed several thousand years ago when a meander of the Missouri River was cut off. In its former form, the depth of the lake varied from 10 to 30 feet and covered over 400 acres . Until the middle of the 20th century, there was a smaller lake to the west of the large lake. This was called The Upper or Little Creve Coeur Lake . However, due to the formation of sludge, this disappeared over time. Lake Coeur Lake became the location of a large resort and vacation area. At the time, the lake was about two and a half miles long and a mile wide. In 1881 the Missouri Pacific Railroad built a branch line to the lake from Laclede Station . Jacob Studt, a local farmer and shop owner, built the first of several hotels, dance pavilions, and boathouses on Lake Superior. In 1889, he offered land and a subsidy for the annual fair, which was held there for about thirty years.

Rowing competitions were held on the lake as part of the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis . After the World's Fair , which took place in the same year as the Games, a 77-meter-high observation tower was moved from Forest Park in St. Louis to the adjacent park. Between 1950 and 1955 the lake was almost dry, as a result of which local conservationists tried to save the fish in the lake. In the years that followed, the Missouri River rose again, causing it to fill up with water and the fish population to rise again. From 1974 to 1981 dredging took place on the lake and the lake became deeper and enlarged.
