Frontal view of the Stephan Lochner School

The Stephan-Lochner-Schule is a two-class community elementary school with an open all day in the Rathenauviertel in Cologne . The university, Rathenauplatz and Zülpicher Platz are in the immediate vicinity . It is named after the painter Stephan Lochner . There are currently around 210 students from different nations attending the eight classes of the school.

history

In 1899 the school initially served as a primary school with 717 children in eleven classes - separated by sex. Therefore there are still two schoolyards today . With a gym and a "shower bath " it was considered one of the most modern schools in Cologne. In the first year, around 10,000 people use the showers installed. It was a welcome change from the wash tub in the kitchen at home.

A heater was installed for the first time in 1926. The building served as a barracks during World War I, and only limited school operations could take place during World War II. Regular classes began again in 1945, with nine school classes with 50–60 children per class. At the time, the Stephan Lochner School was the only school in the area that was not destroyed. The building was listed as a historical monument in 1980.

About 100 students between the ages of 6 and 10 were educated in the school in the 1990s. The hundredth birthday was celebrated on September 25, 1999 with a big party.

The following quote from the former headmistress Lenders comes from the celebratory speech on the occasion of the centenary and has not lost its validity to this day: “The special thing about our school is the multinationality. In addition to the many German students, so-called "side beginners" visit our school. [...] Everyone learns to live together. The children feel at home here, and we try to give everyone the tools they need for life. "

The school owes its name to an initiative by the former headmaster Commer.

Cross-year learning

In the Stephan Lochner School, learning from and with one another is the focus. Thanks to a "rolling system with ascending main groups", the children remain in a constant class community during their primary school years.

The first graders are enrolled in a mixed year class together with second or fourth graders. Before starting school, registered preschool children can sit in at the Stephan Lochner School and get to know future classmates.

On their first day of school, the first graders are welcomed by their “godparents” and accompanied by the “godparents” until their “godparents” leave school. In this way, the older children learn to take responsibility for others and can in turn reassure themselves of the skills they have acquired. Independent and cooperative learning becomes a matter of course right from the start.

Open all day

The Stephan Lochner School has been an open all-day school since 2004. Over 95% of the students are currently using the open all-day offer. The good cooperation between the teachers and the supervisors in the afternoon is particularly characterized by the constant exchange between the group leaders and class teachers. This is guaranteed by networking: In individual lessons, both teachers and group leaders are together in the class. So z. B. the class council takes place together. The employees of the whole day are informed about the organization of the learning time in the afternoon. Excursions and school trips are also planned and carried out together, if possible. If it is deemed necessary and sensible, parent discussions with the group leader and teacher take place together.
