Stephan I (Champagne)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephan I (French: Étienne ; † June 1, 1019 or 1021) was a Count of Meaux and Troyes ( Champagne ). He was the only son of Count Heribert the Younger († 995/996) and his unknown wife.

Little is known about Stephen's reign. His name and that of his wife Ala / Alix are only associated with the blessing of the relics of Saint Ayoul made by Archbishop Sewin von Sens , whose bones were recovered in Provins in 996. He is mentioned again during a donation from King Robert II to Lagny Abbey in 1019. In a letter from the same abbey to Archbishop Léotheric von Sens from the year 1021, Stephen's death is recorded. His cousin Count Odo II of Blois successfully fought for Stephen's inheritance against the king.
