Stephan of Perche

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephan von Perche (actually from Le Perche ; French Étienne du Perche ; * after 1137; † 1169 ) was Chancellor of the Kingdom of Sicily (1166–1168) and Elect - Archbishop of Palermo (1167–1168).

He was probably a son of Count Rotrou III. from Le Perche .

He was invited to Sicily by his relative Margaret of Navarre when she took over the rule of Sicily in 1166. During this time Stephan intended to undertake a crusade to the Holy Land and he did so. Once there, Margaret appointed him Chancellor of Sicily in 1166 and had him elected Archbishop of Palermo in 1167. At the Sicilian court he came into conflict with Matheus von Salerno , among others, and was dismissed from his office in 1168 after some unrest and forced into exile.

Stephan then went to the Kingdom of Jerusalem where he soon fell seriously ill and died in 1169. He was buried in Jerusalem.
