Stephanus Jacobus du Toit

Reverend Stephanus Jacobus du Toit (* 1847 , † 1911 ) was one of the pioneers in recognizing Afrikaans as a separate language. He was leader and founding member of the Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners , which later merged with the Zuidafrikaansche Boeren Beschermings Vereeniging (South African Association for the Protection of the Boers) in the Afrikander Bond .

SJ du Toit was editor of the first Afrikaans magazine Die Afrikaanse Patriot and lived from 1889 to 1904 in the Patriotsgebouw in the Hoofstraat of Paarl , where the printing works and a bookstore were located.

His son Jakob Daniël du Toit was also a pioneer of Afrikaans. As a writer he was known by his nickname Totius .
