Life

Du Toit's father was the editor Stephanus Jacobus du Toit , who, like his son later, was committed to the recognition of Afrikaans as the official language . Jakob Daniël du Toit attended a German mission school and the Hugenot Memorial School in Daljosafat . He studied theology in Burgersdorp and became a military pastor in the Boer units at the time of the Second Boer War .

After the war he studied at the Free University of Amsterdam and obtained a doctorate in theology. He then received ordination as a pastor from the Dutch Reformed Church . In 1911 he was appointed professor at the theological faculty at Potchefstroom University.

Politically, Totius was conservative-patriotic. He used the Bible to justify the principles of racial segregation and thereby exerted a powerful influence on believers. He translated large parts of the Bible into Afrikaans and also wrote poetic versions of the Psalms in Afrikaans. Recurring themes in his poetry were faith, nature, British imperialism and the Boer nation. He processed his travel experiences in the Netherlands and Palestine in the Skemering poetry collection (1948).

His life was overshadowed by the tragic deaths of his children.

Totius was 1916 Trekkerswee the first winner of the Hertzog Prize .
