Attractions

There are ten national monuments of South Africa in Burgersdorp:

The church was declared a national monument in 1996.
  • the Sentinel Blockhouse guardhouse
a log house from the Second Boer War . The building was listed as a historical monument as early as 1939.
  • Monument of the Dutch language
a memorial for the Dutch or Afrikaans language from 1893. It shows a woman pointing a finger at a book in her other hand. The monument became a national monument in 1937.
Although the inscription on the monument speaks of the Hollandse taal (" Dutch language "), it can also be related to Afrikaans.
The monument was damaged in the Second Boer War, after which Lord Milner had the statue removed. In 1907 a replica was made and erected. The original was found in King William's Town in 1939 . Today it stands next to the replica in Burgersdorp. There are allegations that Lord Milner had the statue removed not because it was damaged, but because he was against the Afrikaans and the monument was not built by the government but by a group of Boers.
  • the Christ Church
  • the Coetzee house
  • the De Bruin House
  • the Jubilee Fountain
  • the Old Gaol building
  • the old rectory of the Reformed Church
  • an old school building for theologians of the Dutch Reformed Church
