Gordon Maskew Fair

Gordon Maskew Fair (born July 27, 1894 in Burgersdorp , Cape Province , † February 11, 1970 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) was an American engineer who dealt specifically with problems of water supply and sewage disposal .

Life

Fair was born as the son of a native German and a native Englishwoman in the Cape Province (now South Africa ). In 1901 he traveled to Germany, attended the Werner Siemens Realgymnasium in Berlin and began studying at the Technical University of Berlin . After the outbreak of World War I , he emigrated to the USA and studied at MIT and Harvard University . In 1918 he began teaching at Harvard University as a lecturer, in 1935 he became a professor for sanitary engineering at this university and worked there until his retirement.

His scientific contributions mainly concern problems of water supply and wastewater treatment , for which he created theoretical foundations and which he analyzed using mathematical methods. He dealt with various aspects of public health ( Public Health ), and in particular the Public Health Engineering and environmental issues. Fair was the author of several highly regarded monographs. He has also worked as an advisor to government agencies and state and private institutions, including the US military, the Rockefeller Foundation and the International Red Cross in Geneva.

In 1927 he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1934 of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 1967 he was accepted into the National Academy of Engineering . Fair has received multiple honorary doctorates.

Honors

Since 1971 the American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists has presented the Gordon Maskew Fair Award annually for outstanding achievements in the field of environmental science and environmental technology.
