Stephen B. Oates

Stephen Baery Oates (* 1936 ) is an American historian and author. He was a professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst .

He published in particular on American history of the 19th century ( Civil War ) and is known, among other things, for a biography of Abraham Lincoln .

He was one of the historical advisors for the Ken Burns Civil War television series ( The American Civil War ).

Oates received the Nevins-Freeman Award from the Chicago Civil War Round Table. His Lincoln biography won the Christopher Award and his biography of Martin Luther King won the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Book Award.
